U.S. Troop Levels In Afghanistan

Former President Barack Obama came into office planning to end the U.S. military role in Afghanistan, but announced in July 2016 that there would still be around 8,400 American troops in the country at the end of his term. A senior U.S. official says that President Trump plans to deploy about 4,000 more American troops, which would raise the force there to about 12,500.
