Doubling Rates Of COVID-19 Deaths Begin To Slow In Some States

Within the first week of passing 10 deaths, Washington deaths doubled every five days. Over the past week, growth rate has slowed, and deaths in the state doubled every nine days. This chart uses a logarithmic scale, where each increment on the y-axis represents a tenfold increase in the number of deaths. Dotted lines show the slope of deaths doubling every one, three, five or seven days.

State
Doubling time within a week of 10th death
Doubling time between April 3-9
Washington 5 days 9 days
Louisiana 2 days 6 days
New York 2 days 4 days
California 3 days 6 days

Notes

A logarithmic scale is meant to emphasize rate of change and allows for the display of a wide range of numbers. States’ doubling rates are calculated using daily growth rates averaged over the week. Latest daily numbers as of 8 p.m. April 9.
