Share Of Freelance Workers Increases In The Past Year

In 2020, 36% of workers reported that they freelanced full time, up 8 percentage points from 2019.

Source: 2020 data come from an Upwork/Edelman Intelligence survey of 6,001 U.S. adults who have done paid work in the past 12 months, conducted June 15-July 17. The margin of error for the overall sample is 1.2 percentage points; for the full-time freelancer sample, 4.1 percentage points. Data from previous years come from Upwork/Freelancers Union surveys conducted in the summers of 2014-2019.
