More than a quarter of renters report serious problems paying rent in the past few months

Respondents were asked whether anyone in their household had been having serious problems paying the mortgage/rent in the past few months. Among homeowners, only 7% reported serious problems paying their mortgages nationally.

Source: NPR/Robert Wood Johnson Foundation/Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health poll of 3,616 adults conducted Aug. 2-Sept. 7. The margin of error for the national sample is 3.4 percentage points, 6.2 for New York City, 7.9 for Los Angeles, 6.3 for Chicago, and 7.3 for Houston.
