Jail enforcement model
Local jail officers trained by ICE screen people booked into a local jail's custody for immigration status. If someone is suspected of being undocumented, ICE is notified and the person is held for transfer to federal custody.
Warrant service officer
Similar to the jail model, but local officers are specifically authorized to serve and execute ICE administrative warrants on individuals already in local custody.
Task force model
Local police officers are given broad authority to perform immigration enforcement during routine policing. That includes questioning, stopping, and arresting individuals for suspected immigration violations.

– Washington, D.C.'s Metropolitan Police Department says it has not entered into a 287(g) agreement with ICE. And officially D.C. is not recorded as having a signed agreement in place, per ICE data. However, D.C. Police Chief Pamela Smith signed an executive order allowing MPD officers to cooperate with federal immigration enforcement agencies.
– A fourth model, the Tribal Task Force Model, gives power to tribal law enforcement agencies to enforce limited immigration authority. There is no recorded agreement signed and recorded in ICE data, as of Feb. 11, 2026.
