Christie Compared with some of his opponents, Chris Christie intends to preserve the Federal Reserve’s independence, though he said Fed Chair Jerome Powell “waited too long” to act on rising inflation rates. “I don’t have anything that I think Jay has done horribly wrong. I think that he probably should have started tightening sooner than he did,” Christie said. Still, Christie has given the Fed credit for helping inflation retreat to lower levels: “Inflation has started to retreat, I think almost exclusively because of [Federal Reserve] policy,” he said last September. Christie said the larger issue at hand is to rein in government spending more broadly, which in turn would resolve inflation.
DeSantis “We need to rein in the Federal Reserve,” Ron DeSantis said. He claims the Fed has failed to control inflation rates, went beyond its purview, printed too much money in response to COVID-19 and kept policies lax for far too long after the effects of the financial crisis and the pandemic. He sees the Fed as having a “limited role.” “It’s got one job — maintaining stable prices — and it has departed from that with what it’s done over the last many years,” he said. DeSantis has also said he wouldn’t renominate Powell for another term.
Haley While Nikki Haley has not explicitly stated what she plans to do with the Fed should she be elected, she has previously emphasized that the Fed’s primary responsibility is to stabilize the U.S. dollar. “What’s the role of the Fed? To protect the strength of the dollar — period,” she said. “And if you lose the strength of the dollar, what happens? That’s our national security at risk. Because that’s what keeps us as a superpower. China and Russia, they’re salivating at that fact, and if we don’t get this under control, we’re going to look like Japan.”
Ramaswamy Vivek Ramaswamy has heavily criticized the Fed, saying it has done a “disastrous job” and has danced a dangerous game of “playing God with a fat finger” in balancing inflation, thus inhibiting economic growth. “I’m going to put the Fed back in its place by telling them to focus on stabilizing the U.S. dollar, you could say, as measured against a basket of currencies, and that should be their sole mandate,” he said. To do so, he plans on cutting down the “head count in the U.S. Fed system itself” by at least 90 percent.
Trump Donald Trump has admitted to pressuring Powell while he was president. “We do know that I put a lot of pressure on him,” Trump said. “It was outside pressure, because nobody knows whether or not you can really do that, but I did, because I thought his interest rates were too high. And he ultimately dropped his interest rates.”
