A Vanishing Lifestyle
Today, only one in four Mongolians is engaged in the traditional rural lifestyle. The overall proportion of Mongolian households with herding as their primary economic means has decreased from 50% to 25% since 1999, driven by job loss in the countryside and migration to urban centers, including the capital city of Ulaanbaatar. Each line represents the percentage of herding households in one of Mongolia’s 21 provinces.
