Remdesivir Allocation Leaves Some States With A Bigger Deficit Than Others

Hover or tap on a line to see what percentage of a state or territory’s hospitalized COVID-19 patients could be treated with its remdesivir allocation from week to week. When lines pass through the teal area there is enough remdesivir for each hospitalized patient. When lines pass through the red area, less remdesivir has been allocated than is needed to treat each patient. The black line represents the percentage of all U.S. COVID-19 patients who could be covered by that week’s allocation.

Percentage of hospitalized COVID-19 patients remdesivir allocation could treat

1
The week of July 27, 18 states and territories were offered no remdesivir, including nine states with increasing COVID-19 hospitalizations.
2
The week of Aug. 3, Vermont was offered nearly six times the amount of remdesivir its hospitalized patients needed.
3
In recent weeks, the total amount of remdesivir allocated by the Department of Health and Human Services has increased substantially.

Notes

Raw number of how many patients each allocation would treat is calculated using a standard five-day course of remdesivir, which is six vials.
