A majority of Americans think the economy is in a recession

Source: NPR/PBS News/Marist Poll of 1,440 U.S. adults, conducted Dec. 8-11, 2025. The margin of error overall is 3.2 percentage points. The margin of error for Democrats is 5.7 percentage points; for Republicans, 5.9 percentage points; and for Independents, 6.2 percentage points. The margin of error for white respondents is 4.0 percentage points; for Black respondents, 9.5 percentage points; and for Hispanic/Latino respondents, 8.1 percentage points. The margin of error for respondents under 45 is 4.6 percentage points; and for respondents over 45, 4.3 percentage points.
