How does the federal government spend its money? 

Roughly two-thirds of the $6.6 trillion that the U.S. government has spent so far this fiscal year (October 2024 - August 2025) has been on mandatory entitlement programs like Social Security and Medicare. The DOGE effort is focused so far on a very small piece of the federal budgetary pie.
