In key states, election-denying secretary of state candidates largely underperformed other Republicans. In competitive states, secretary of state nominees who deny the 2020 election results generally underperformed in the midterms, when compared to fellow Republicans who ran for U.S. Senate, governor and attorney general. Numbers shown are the percent of votes cast for a secretary of state candidate as a percent of votes cast for the state's top GOP vote-getter.
Notes Competitive states are defined as states between R+5 and D+5 in the Cook Political Report's 2022 Partisan Voting Index. Eight of those states had contested elections for secretary of state this year. This chart does not include Wisconsin because the position does not oversee voting.
