Washington is a reliable Democratic state in presidential elections. There is a statewide race for governor this year, with incumbent Democrat Jay Inslee running for reelection. The state has 10 congressional districts. Washington holds nonpartisan primaries for congressional and state races, where the top two finishers proceed to the general election, regardless of party. Voters must declare a partisan preference to participate in presidential primaries but are not required to do so in advance.
